Heres how to escape the two foes of happiness

Heres how to escape the two foes of happinessHeres how to escape the two foes of happinessNot many people looked to Arthur Schopenhauer in his lifetime, but his thinking about menschengerecht nature has deeply influenced a long list of subsequent writers and philosophers. He was one of the first major wildwestfilm thinkers to incorporate aspects of Eastern philosophy into his work, except that many of his conclusions were generally a little mora pessimistic. He saw reality as driven by a blind will that manifested itself in humans as illogical and pointless desires. For him, the only way out of this was through a kind of asceticism, where much of ur material pleasures are given up as to fight against this irrational will. The biggest criticism of Schopenhauer is indeed this defeatist view, one that didnt attempt to strike a balance. Nonetheless, its clear that he had thought deeply about these issues, and even if his conclusions were unsatisfactory, there was still a kernel of truth to them.In his essay The Wisdom of Life, he did something unlike him. He deviated away from his pessimism and tried to outline what it would take to live a happy life in this world as it is. In doing so, he insightfully pointed to one of the chief struggles of ur existenceThe most general survey shows us that the two foes of human happiness are pain and boredom. We may go further, and say that in the degree in which we are fortunate enough to get away from the one, we approach the other. Life presents, in fact, a more or less violent oscillation between the two.The reason of this is that each of these two poles stands in a double antagonism to the other, external or objective, and inner or subjective. Needy surroundings and poverty produce pain while, if a man is more than well off, he is bored. Accordingly, while the lower classes are engaged in a ceaseless struggle with need, in other words, with pain, the upper carry on a constant and often desperate battle with boredom.Stuck in the pleasure/pain axisTraditional psychology and neuroscience have assumed that humans have innate biological pathways embedded into us by evolution, expressed as feelings like grasplatz and joy. This reasoning holds that emotions are universal and specific and that we can map them out if we study the human body in close detail across a variety of cultures and environments. This view is so deeply ingrained in popular culture that most of us, too, would argue that there is something specific like anger and joy that we can identify in others at different times. The theory of constructed emotions, however, argues otherwise. While, yes, something we roughly identify as anger is experienced by us, it doesnt exist in the concrete and specific way that we think it does. Its a complex and summarized mixture of everything going on in our body at a particular time (as to orient us), and it varies from one instance to another.1According to this view, the only thing that exists is the pleasure/pain a xis, which serves to absorb information both from our body and our surroundings to give a rough idea of what we need. Within this axis, we experience affect an ever-changing conscious reality.Everything else particularly emotion and cognition only exists because we create linguistic distinctions between them. Anger is only anger because we collectively call it anger. The interesting thing is that Schopenhauer takes it a step further with his distinction of pain and boredom. While pain can be constant and ever-present (its a call to action, so if you dont respond to it, it persists), pleasure (or a similarly good feeling) isnt and turns into boredom if you have everything you need (if it didnt, survival would be out of the question). In a way, as Schopenhauer points out, we are essentially stuck in this fluctuation. If we get away from one, we move towards the other, and neither provide any long-term satisfaction. Now, its easy to see how pain is unwelcomed, but a deep existential bo redom can be similarly torturous. In some cases, perhaps even more so, leading to nihilism and depression. There is a lot we are still uncertain about in terms of how we experience our conscious reality, but the fact that we are living within the pleasure/pain axis seems close to certain.Cultivating a mind/body connectionTo solve this problem, Schopenhauer suggests that we leave behind our preoccupations with the world around us and instead retreat to the world of thought and create inward wealth.Well, he doesnt necessarily suggest that physical pain can be escaped in the mind, but he does make the case that we can break the shackles of boredom, at least, with thought.By ignoring the external world and the associations we have in it with pleasure and pain, he argues that we can somehow leave behind this pleasure/pain axis altogether within the mind. And this, perhaps, is where Schopenhauer sounds better on paper than in real life.If the theory of constructed emotions is right, then t here is really no hard distinction where thought somehow lives outside of the pleasure/pain axis. Its all one side of the same coin.In fact, though, in some instances of boredom and pain, does nothing but augment what causes dissatisfaction. Quite often, its not as simple as thinking about something else to get away from what you dont want to face. We dont always have control over that.A better solution, maybe, is to create inward wealth by cultivating a more holistic mind/body connection, where you pay just as much attention to the body as you do to your thoughts. In many cases of pain and boredom, when it is thought which augments the dissatisfaction, observing the body and the sensations on it, without attaching yourself to them as thought does, you can see the ever-changing nature of the affect that you are experiencing.Very few people consciously spend time in their body, experiencing movements and feelings that arise, but when its done with intention, it can be just as therapeu tic as a mental escape. It reminds you there is more to what you experience on a daily basis than whatever it is that boils to the surface. By default, we dont think about being in our body because we have automated the parts of our awareness that consciously pay attention to it, and its precisely for this reason that getting in touch with that awareness can point us in a new direction. The problems of pain and boredom cant be solved by retreating to one or the other, either thought (subjective, internal) or body (objective, external), but they have to work together. The takeawayRegardless of whether Schopenhauer was right about everything, its hard not to respect his courage in trying to see reality for what it is rather than settling for an unfounded iabspracheism. His whole philosophy works in a fairly coherent fashion, and much of it is understandable enough to apply to our day to day life in a way that clears out some of the muddy waters. The chief struggle experienced in the human condition, as identified by Schopenhauer, says something that modern biology has known since Darwin and takes it a step further we live in the pleasure/pain axis, yes, but sustained pleasure almost always leads to boredom.Pain gives us information that something is wrong and we need to fix it, and some form of it tends to persist until the problem is solved. Pleasure, on the other hand, is a reward, but if the reward is continuously present, it ceases to be rewarding, leading to a certain dullness. While there are ways to escape this dullness by retreating to the mind and to intellectual thought, we cant completely sever the link between experience and the pleasure/pain axis.To balance the ever-changing effect we live with, in a healthy way, we need to develop a mind/body connection, one that holistically incorporates the two to manage change.By watching and paying attention to our body, outside of the boundaries of thought, we can bring to the foreground the feelings and sensations that are masked by an inattentive mind. When stated, its quite evident that the mind and the body work together, that they have a feedback loop that connects them, but in reality, we often ignore this at our own peril.Dissatisfaction exists whether we want it to, but how we deal with it makes all the difference.Want to think and live smarter? 4 To-Dos for Your First Year on the Job

4 To-Dos for Yur First Year on the Job4 To-Dos for Your First Year on the JobWhen I started my first job out of college (actually, while I was still in college), the idea of working someplace every day for an entire year was a bit terrifying. Although my course schedule was always full, and Id worked during school as well, Id never had to clock a full eight (ahem, 12) hours in a row- and of the hours I did put in, none were under the watchful eye of anyone but myself. So, when my first one-year anniversary approached, I was pretty proud Id made it Then, right as I was about to start patting myself on the back, my manager sat me down to go over my performance- which is when I realized there was a lot more I couldve been doing to set myself up for success in those first 12 months. In my defense, none of these things were outlined in my job description, nor were they in the goals my boss had set out for me. No, the difference between simply doing a good job and being seen as invaluable pa rt of the team isnt about hitting your numbers or meeting your goals- its the much more subtle things that have an impact on how youre perceived at work.Since then, Ive figured out there are a few key milestones everyone should try to achieve within that first year at a new company, in a new department, or in a new role. So review this list at least once a quarter (if not more), and make sure stay youre on track to impress your boss when anniversary time rolls around.1. Name that SuitBy the end of your first year, you should know the names of all your immediate colleagues, and a little bit about them, too. This helps show you care about your team beyond a superficial level, and starts to create roots that can lead to professional perks like mentors, opportunities to take on more, and yes, even raises and promotions. An important note Dont focus your memory skills only on the big cheeses- build relationships with everyone, and I mean everyone. Job title is not synonymous with influen ce, so getting to know your receptionist, janitor, or parking attendant could open doors you never thought possible. (Not to mention, its just the right thing to do.)2. Be Someones GodfatherDon Corleone knew a thing or two about favors- most notably the fact that after doing someone a solid, he knew that, someday, he could call upon that person for a favor of his own. The workplace may not be quite like working for the mafia (if it is, please tell us all about it), but the Godfather had it right.Within your first year, you should have done a few favors of your own.But dont worry- they dont need to be mob-level favors- a simple offer to help someone out thats working late or cover for a colleague who needs to leave early will suffice. When you offer to ease that burden as the rookie, it says a lot about you, and creates a solid foundation of trust and reliability with your colleagues thats difficult to achieve without years on the clock. That said, while its a generally accepted socia l contract to return a favor, its by no means a guarantee- and when you do a colleague a favor, it should be because youre truly trying to help, not channeling your inner mobster.3. Become a BaristaWhether you mainline your coffee or prefer tea, knowing how to brew a good cup o joe will endear you to many a bleary-eyed, coffee-loving colleague. Those of us that love our morning coffee usually end up being the ones to make it every morning (and make a new pot when someone drinks the last cup), and while we know and trust our own brewing skills, its a welcome treat to discover a pot of coffee has already been made- and its good. Believe me A good cup of coffee will win you a special place in your colleagues hearts, and the coffee-bond is one thats hard to break.(Note If you arent comfortable with your brewing skills just yet, experiment on a willing coffee-drinking colleague until you get it right. Brewing a watery pot of coffee could have disastrous consequences.)4. Find Your PersonW ith every job, Ive had someone that became my go-to person. This person wasnt necessarily in my department, or even the same state- but we worked together in some capacity, and through a mutually beneficial partnership, endeavored to help each other get shit done.Find this person- and ideally sooner, rather than later. Ill give you a hint Look for the person who can make miracles happen at the 11thhour, when everyone else tells you they cant be done. This person is usually part of operations or the back office. Get in good with that person, and I guarantee, youll be pulling strings even the highest-level executives couldnt touch.Ultimately, what you accomplish in your first year will say a lot about the kind of asset youll be to your employer. Working hard to crank out a lot of product may seem like a strategy that will get you noticed, and thats probably true- but what does it say about you as a long-term investment for the company? If you weave yourself into the fabric of the compa ny culture first, youll establish a relationship with your working community and demonstrate to everyone that youre committed to the success of the entire company, not just your own. And that is what will make you an asset in the long run.Photo of woman working courtesy of Shutterstock.

I worked for Disney. Now Im writing scripts for my own films. (The Story Behind a Resume)

I worked for Disney. Now Im writing scripts for my own films. (The Story Behind a Resume)I worked for Disney. Now Im writing scripts for my own films. (The Story Behind a Resume)After seeing Jurassic Park at the age of seven, Ibrahim suddenly knew what he wanted to do in life. Not to get eaten by a dinosaur, obviously, but to be the one who creates worlds like the one he just saw. Pursuing his dream of becoming a film maker, he has already worked for some media and digital companies, including Disney. To make his dream really come true, hes now writing scripts for his own two films. But it welchesnt easy to get to this point and it didnt happen overnight. Thats what this interview is all about. Its about pursuing your own Jurassic dream and working hard towards fulfilling it. Because even your most daring dreams can become reality if you stick to them.Ibrahim will give you some tips that might help you achieve them.Oh, and by the way, this isnt our first interview. Try to check this o ne too. This oneis also a killer. Speaking of which, dont forget about this oneeither.Ibrahim will tell youWhat its like to work for DisneyWhy its good to have an online resume or portfolioWhat are the key things for advancing your careerThat its completely okay if your ideas get shot down sometimesHow to handle stress at workThat its leid stupid to ask for adviceWhy networking is super importantHow to practice creativityAnd then some.Who is Ibrahim Mahdi? (Video Production Assistant Resume Sample)Your CV says that you decided to be part of digital industry after seeing Jurassic Park. Its a true movie milestone, but can you tell why did it impress you that much?First of all, dinosaurs were a huge thing ?? For me as a kid, this film welches just fascinating. Back then, it was one of the biggest movies with CGI and special effects. I was curious about who created it, how do people make something like that, what is real and what isnt. This was so confusing and fascinating to me at the same time. Later, I watched a behind-the-scenes where they showed how they made the movie. They showed all the people working on the robots and how the tischset came to life. And I was like Wow These are people that created this world. It doesnt just happen. Behind it, there is a huge team of people who work together to tell a story. It was just fascinating to do that.Youre already working in the film and digital industry. Would you say you accomplished your Jurassic dream?I feel that Im working towards that, but Im not there yet. I want to do bigger things like working on blockbusters and bigger films. I am still working towards that but the fact that Im a part of the industry does help me achieve that dream. But you did get a really cool job at Disney. What was it like to work for one of the worlds leading entertainment companies?Very interesting I worked for Disney Streaming Services as a production assistant in their video department. It was fantastic to be at the front lines of the content production. My role was to receive videos of sports and live veranstaltungs, tag them and fill in any necessary information what happened in the video, who was there and a description of it. Then I would send it to the other platforms. It was fascinating because I got to see that its such a large ecosystem of media content creation and to be a part of that was just absolutely incredible. Were you working there externally while also working at AMC Networks?Yes. A part of my journey was to get as much experience as possible, as quickly as possible. In order to be able to work at AMC and Disney, I had to take on a contractor role and work there at nights after my full time job. It was a bit of a challenge but nothing good ever comes easy. It takes a lot of work. As long as youre determined and motivated to do it, your spirit and energy will help you get there. You always have to keep that goal in the back of your head. What did the hiring process look like at Disney?Very stra ightforward. It only consisted of one phone call and a one-day interview. It was a standard interview about my experience, what I can offer, and so on. In the end, I got the offer within a week.Nice Did they also take a look at your online portfolio? I have seen that you have it attached in your CV. Yes, absolutely. I think its very important to have an online portfolio and at least online persona. That definitely helped. At the very least you have something to show. It doesnt have to be exactly only about what you do. If you are creating content and its good, it can help too. Its great to have an online or video resume, especially if youre in the media industry. What is the company culture at Disney like?Very busy ?? But also very respectful, comforting, welcoming and very encouraging to your growth and development.I have learned new things there. It showed me how important it is to have a web experience. Its super important to be a part of the web conversations. The media industry is always changing. Online presence and streaming is now a norm.I would say that for anyone who is trying to get into the media industry it is crucial to write properly, to understand the metadata and to have some web experience. Thats the piece of advice Id like to offer. Can you even watch a film now, a series or other audiovisual material without thinking about what you would do differently? No, its impossible. ?? Now I can tell what is bad and see common mistakes. Sometimes, when Im watching films with my friends or my girlfriend, Im telling them whats going to happen. Usually when you write a movie script, after the fifteen minutes you have the first turning point and in thirty minutes, theres a rising action. And Im like In about two minutes, this person will say or do this or that. And it happens. ?? It sort of ruins movies for me but also helps me to understand them better. I even more appreciate when I see a movie that really strikes me visually or with the story. But you orig inally started as an pro domo editing videos and images. What advice would you give to other people who are starting their career and have similarly big aspirations?I would tell anyone starting a career in the media to always brush up on whats happening in the streets and keep that information in mind. Always be in the know of what platforms are out there and who are the big players. And more specifically - know what you want to do. Thats one of the most important things because the media industry is so huge. You can do photography, video, social media, podcasts. Its just a matter of knowing what you want to do. Do you want to be a film maker? Stick to it.There is no limit to the possibilities. Its just a matter of staying focused, patient and becoming knowledgeable. Also, try to create as many things as possible, even if you dont get paid for it. If you want to be a journalist, just start interviewing people and posting. Or start creating podcasts. Interview your friends, teachers or anyone you find interesting. There is no limit to the possibilities. Its just a matter of staying focused, patient and becoming knowledgeable. I also become very impatient if things dont happen quickly enough. I can get frustrated but then I tell myself that these things take time. Another advice would be to meet other people. Its a people geschftliches miteinander and its very important to have a good reputation. Just try to be likable. Its important to talk to others and not get stuck in your shell. Go to conferences, talks or panels. If theres going to be someone whose writing you admire, just go You might not get to speak to that person but you can find a valuable contact in the audience. You often find a potential collaborator in the most random places.Did you experience something like that?Yes, I can give you a perfect example. I met one of my future bosses at a the Kids Day event that AMC organizes every year. During that day, I met a creative director who was looking for a producer. I told him that Im really interested in producing and he kept me in mind and, after few months, I got the role. Its really important to put yourself out there and to meet as many people as possible. What would you say are the most important milestones that shaped your career?School, for sure. Education matters a lot and one shouldnt underestimate the value of being smart. A lot of people tend to look down on school right now saying Oh no, school is so expensive or that I dont need a degree to be a content creator. The second opinion can work out for some people, but its very difficult if you dont have at least some education behind you.Another personal milestone, was being able to create shorts and putting them online. One of my shorts actually made it to public television. That felt very good even though I didnt get any money for it. Also, getting my internship and then getting hired full time after graduation. But in the end, everything that led me there was also sort o f a milestone. Every move that you make in your career and the connections that you make can open up new opportunities. I think thats important and you shouldnt underestimate how far you can go just by shifting your perspective and, at times, shifting where you work. ??Eventually, it takes some time to develop a good career.Yes. And theres another bit of advice Id like to offer. fruchtwein people who are looking for a job immediately think of big players like Disney, AMC or HBO. But there are hundreds of smaller companies out there that need production professionals, even retailers or clothing manufacturers. They need media people to make campaigns, ads, and so on. It tends to get overlooked by students and young media professionals. Even though its not a big name media company, it can still teach you a lot of media skills and give you opportunities. Many people dont see that.Everyone wants to work for the big guys but you can start smaller and still grow. They just say Oh, I dont wa nt to work at Walmart. But Walmart has a huge production department. Its important to realize that media companies are not the only ones that make media. Everyone wants to work for the big guys but you can start smaller and still grow.Your CV says you have three jobs now. How can you manage that? Are you again working during nights? Its really about time management. Besides my main job, I perform and write for a theatre. We meet from 7 to 10 in the evening, so it doesnt interfere with my full time job at all. It can be a little tiring as you have to work till late at night and still be creative and perform at a certain level. Its important to get enough sleep and structure your day. Sometimes, I work on weekends too at my third job as an AV specialist at the Liberty Science Centre where I set up equipment. Its a non-profit as its a museum, but I feel good about it. Even though its during weekends, its my pleasure to do it. If youre willing to sacrifice your weekends for work, that ca n also present a bunch of opportunities. Many people dont like to work during weekends and but weekend jobs can also grant you new experience.READI spent six months in a Lebanese refugee camp. (The Story Behind a Resume)But working that much and especially in a high pressure media position can be quite stressful. What are your tips for handling stress in the workplace? If youre having a tough day, go for a walk, take a break, talk to a colleague. Dont be so quick to respond to an email. If youre in a bad mood, it can backfire. Take a minute to step back and understand the situation. Get enough sleep Sleep is important ?? Everyone has a bad day or gets little tired of work sometimes. Its important to recognize that before it catches up to you. Just take a step back and relieve your stress so that you can come back to work and do great things when once you feel a little better. Its not stupid to ask for help. Also, ask the right questions if you find yourself in a difficult situation and youre confused or struggling to finish a task. This is something I saw often when I worked with interns. Even when they are confused, they dont ask questions because they dont want to seem like they dont know what theyre doing. But then it gets worse. If you dont get the answers you need, youre going to fail at your task and end up creating even more work for yourself. Its important to ask the right questions early, so you avoid stress. Also, if you find yourself in a stressful situation, express that too. Reach out to a teamberater or a colleague and say Hey, Im in this situation, how did you solve this problem in the past?. Its not stupid to ask for help.Apart from successful projects, sketches, trailers, etc., did you work on any projects that werent very successful? What did you learn from them?Yes, definitely. Working in the creative industry, you will always have ideas that get shot down. That happens every week. ?? I come up with a concept for a script and it gets shot down. Or I write a script and we perform it but in the end we have to say Ok, this wasnt the best. That just happens naturally. If doesnt happen to you, then you arent doing something right. You can only develop your work if you learn a lot about things that dont work. Theres always the second or third draft. Even the best creators have to struggle with that. You just need to deal with it. Dont get offended. Dont take criticism personally. Its not an attack, its a feedback to help you get better. Listen to what people have to say and then try it again. Do the second, third or the fourth version. It comes down to being open-minded. Thats how I deal with it. Trust me, it happens a lot to anyone. What do you do when you feel like you lack creativity? Do you think its possible to practice it?In my case, practicing creativity happens through performing and writing sketches. I think creativity is in everyone, but some people show it more than others. If you want more creativity in your life, the n you should surround yourself with more creative people. Surround yourself with more writers, performers, photographers and other creative people. Be open-minded and then it just happens naturally. The worst thing you can do is just copy someone else and be unoriginal. Im not saying not to watch other stuff because its important to know what other people are doing. Inspiration from others is important, but dont copy them. And where are you getting all the inspiration from? Which film producer inspires you the most? When I was a kid, the work of Steven Spielberg definitely inspired me the most. Currently, what influences me is sketch comedy. It inspires me because its very short, quick and impactful form.Working in comedy and with other performers and writers keeps me inspired too. If you want some big names, my favorite directors are Quentin Tarantino and, well, I also cant forget to mention Stanley Kubrick. Hes also one of the greatest.Did you ever think about writing a script for your own movie and producing it?Yes, thats my main goal and a huge dream of mine. Right now, Im working on two scripts. One is a sci-fi comedy and the second is a horror. Horror is one of the straightforward genres. Your audience is going to watch your film to be taken out of their comfort zone and get scared. You need a very scary idea but dont need any big name actors, director or a screenwriter. All you need is a good story. If you can scare people, it will work. Horror fans are very invested in their genre and if they find something really good, they wont stop talking about it. The same thing goes for sci-fi. It helps to have a big name star, but if you have a good concept, you can get away without it. You just need that fresh idea. Of course, another great challenge is budgeting and filming it.How does your script-writing process look like?Well, its a long process. Writing is very lonely. ?? And writing involves a lot of rewriting. I believe the first draft is never the best. M aybe there are some very gifted writers who get it right on the first try. Thats a blessing. For me, it takes at least three or five rewrites until I have expressed what I really want to say. The first draft for me is just spilling all the ideas onto the paper. I just want to see it and have everything written in front of me. The second draft is usually like Oh, where does it fit? Where does it go? How does it start? Where does the action happen?. And then, the third or fourth is just finessing like What would we take out? What doesnt work? What works?Writing and rewriting is a long process if you want to do it right. And at some point, you want another pair of eyes to look at it and get a feedback. Depending on how that goes and depending on the feedback, you might have to edit it a couple of times more. Writing and rewriting is a long process if you want to do it right. You can spend a week on the script, but it might not be the best version of it. If you want to do it right, it wi ll take some time. Unless youre incredibly gifted and can get it done right at the first time.If you want to do something quick and improvise, thats also very valid. Its very important to be able to put content out quickly, especially in the media industry. So, what would you say makes a good writing? Mainly rewriting?Rewriting and also discovering your own unique, original voice. Usually the best stories come from a single unique voice that has never been heard before. A lot of times when big Hollywood movies fail, its because they had too many cooks in the kitchen. You have too many notes from executives, too many rewrites from other writers and it sort of ruins the original message. So, I think having a singular unique point of view and voice is the most important.Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

ASMEs Nominees for the New Faces of Engineering Selected

ASMEs Nominees for the New Faces of Engineering Selected ASMEs Nominees for the New Faces of Engineering Selected ASMEs Nominees for the New Faces of Engineering Selected Six ASME members and student members have been selected as finalists in this years DiscoverE New Faces of Engineering program, which annually highlights the important contributions early career engineers and engineering students are making to the profession and to society. Society members Eduardo Barrientos, PhD, Jessica Isaacs, PhD, and Chelsey Simmons, PhD, were selected as ASMEs nominees in the New Faces of Engineering-Professional category, which recognizes the accomplishments of practicing engineers up to the age of 30. ASME student members Drew Haxton, Courtney Hesse and Angadbir Sabherwal, were selected as the Societys nominees in the New Faces-College Edition program, which recognizes the achievements of third-, fourth- and fifth-year engineering students. The finalists from ASME and the other societies participating in the 2015 DiscoverE New Faces of Engineering program were announced Feb. 19 during a webinar that was held in conjunction with Engineers Week. The official winners in each category will be announced April 2. Eduardo Barrientos New Faces-Professional finalist Eduardo Barrientos is a senior researcher for the Vehicle Center of Sustainability Mobility at the Czech Technical University in Prague. Dr. Barrientos, who is originally from Venezuela, is an expert in the areas of hybrid vehicle technologies and the impact of alternative fuels on emissions and the environment. His volunteer activities have focused on conveying the importance of sustainability to his students, as well as promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM. The former chair of his student section at the Universidad Simon Bolivar of Venezuela, Barrientos currently holds a number of Society posts, including vice president of the Affinity Communities Operating Board, member of the ASME Energy Conversion and Storage Segment Leadership Team, and a member of the ASME Diversity and Inclusion Strategy Committee. Barrientos, the recipient of the prestigious ASME Charles T. Main and Old Guard Early Career Awards, received a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from the Universidad Simon Bolivar of Venezuela, and both a masters degree and a PhD in mechanical engineering from Pennsylvania State University. Jessica Isaacs ASMEs second professional nominee, Jessica Isaacs, PhD, is a visiting assistant professor at Widener University in West Chester, Pa. After receiving a bachelor/s degree in mechanical engineering from Widener University, Dr. Isaacs continued her education at Drexel University, where she studied spine biomechanics and a received master/s degree and a doctorate in mechanical engineering and mechanics. She then received a post-doctoral grant from the Fulbright Scholar Program, which provided her with the opportunity to travel to Tel Aviv University for a year to conduct research on progressive disease pathologies in the intervertebral disc and vertebral bodies leading to lower back pain, and assist in the development and characterization of a fiber-reinforced biocomposite system for medical applications. Isaacs, who recently published a paper in ASME/s Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, earned a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Widener University, and both a masters and a doctorate in mechanical engineering from Drexel University. Chelsey Simmons Chelsey Simmons, PhD, the Societys third finalist for the 2015 New Faces-Professional program, is an assistant professor at the University of Florida, where she is dedicated to developing the next generation of biomedical tools and training the next generation of engineers. In addition to teaching and advising students, Dr. Simmons leads a team of 10 undergraduate and graduate students in interdisciplinary research and has given presentations throughout world on designing dynamic cell culture systems to improve the way biomedical research is performed. Simmons designed a stretchable, programmable dish that mimicked a beating heart, enabling more accurate cell biology and drug screening studies. Based on this patent, she co-founded a company to develop the innovation, which was named the CytoStim Flexor. She earned a bachelors degree in engineering science from Harvard University, and both a masters degree and a PhD in mechanical engineering from Stanford University. Drew Haxton ASMEs three finalists for the 2015 New Faces-College Edition were also announced during the Feb. 19 webinar. One of the nominees, Drew Haxton, is in his third year at Daniel Webster College in Nashua, N.H. Haxton, who is majoring in mechanical engineering major and minoring in aeronautical engineering, is active in his schools ASME and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics student chapter activities, which he finds have greatly enhanced his college experience. The ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge, for instance, allows him to apply what he learned in class to a physical project, he said. A volunteer tutor for both grade school and university students, Haxton is also actively involved in Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, an activity he believes is important because it helps reverse the stereotype that girls lack an aptitude for math and science. I want to live in a world where that stereotype no longer exists, he said in his application. Courtney Hesse ASMEs second New Faces-College Edition nominee, Courtney Hesse, is an ASME student member in her third year at Rice University, majoring in mechanical engineering with a minor in business. 6 Communication Tips That Will Make You a Better Leader

6 Communication Tips That Will Make You a Better Leader 6 Communication Tips That Will Make You a Better Leader Article by Dan Scalco Whether you manage employees, coordinate a team of volunteers, serve on a board, or are in charge of juggling your familys schedule, your leadership skills hinge on your ability to communicate effectively with others. Here are six communication tips  that will make you a better leader, improve your relationships with other people, and boost your teams productivity and morale: 1. Know Yourself All good communication starts from a place of self-awareness. When youre communicating with other people, you need to be aware of your inner monologue. You dont want to take out your bad mood on someone else. Its also important to know what youre hoping to achieve from a given interaction so you can tailor your message accordingly. 2. Know Your Audience The best communication occurs when you understand the person youre speaking to. Knowing your audiences motivations, learning styles, and preferred communication methods allows you to adapt your message to make it more effective for the context. Making a personal connection facilitates empathy, puts people at ease, and builds trust. Just one caveat: In order to be effective, personal connections need to be genuine, not exploitative. 3. Be Direct, Specific, and Clear Clear communication increases the likelihood that people will comprehend your message and take whatever action you may be asking of them. Its better to over-explain something than to leave room for misunderstanding. Whenever youre delivering an assignment or asking for assistance from someone, focus on providing simple, actionable, and specific instructions. Its helpful to prepare your thoughts in advance so you can communicate all the relevant details. Dont end a conversation until youre sure the other person understands your objectives and how to achieve them. Deliver instructions in a friendly, open way so the other person knows they can approach you with follow-up questions. 4. Pay Attention to Nonverbal Communication Plenty of research suggests nonverbal communication is just as important as what a person says, if not  even more important. Facial expressions, hand gestures, posture, and eye contact all play a major role in affirming or undermining your message. Whenever youre talking with someone, try to be aware of both your own body language and the body language of your conversation partner. In particular, pay attention to whether your body language aligns with what youre saying; this will help you to be a more trustworthy communicator and make you  seem more self-assured. 5. Listen More Than You Speak One of the best ways to encourage open and honest communication within a group is to model active listening. When someone is speaking to you, really listen to what theyre saying. Ask follow-up questions to demonstrate that youre paying attention and to make sure there are no miscommunications. Keep an open mind and focus on thoughtfully responding to what people say instead of immediately reacting.  This practice builds rapport and understanding between the communicating parties. 6. Be Positive and Respectful To cultivate loyalty and boost team performance, prioritize transparent, fair, and respectful communication within the group. Dont hold your status over other people or use coercion or fear as motivators. Instead, focus on bringing an honest, positive, and ego-less attitude to every situation that arises. Serving as a cheerleader instead of an autocrat helps maintain morale and can even facilitate creativity and effective problem-solving. â€" Each of the above tips represents an ongoing practice. You wont master them in a day or even a year. Instead, youll need to commit to practicing these strategies for life. The more you implement these skills, the more theyll start to feel like second nature â€" and the more your leadership abilities will benefit. How to Conquer 3 Common Job Search Frustrations

How to Conquer 3 Common Job Search Frustrations How to Conquer 3 Common Job Search Frustrations "At first I had insisted I would only work at a company with a mission I believed in," writes author Robin Sloan in his novel "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore." "Then I thought maybe it would be fine as long as I was learning something new. After that I decided it just couldn't be evil."As Sloan describes, the job search has the tendency to change your perspective for the worst; at first you're dead set on the dream job, but upon realizing the obstacles standing in your way, the concessions start flowing. However, understanding and preparing for the obstacles that result in job search frustration is an important first step in maintaining a positive attitude, despite the challenges you'll likely face. Let's take a closer look.1. Finding the right jobs. While you already know to hit the standard job boards when getting the search started, there are plenty of stories about job seekers securing offers through totally non-traditional strategies. Simultaneously, career experts readily sugg est lots of open positions are never publicly advertised by the hiring firm. So how is the everyday job seeker to identify all the great opportunities for which they're qualified and interested when those opportunities are so widely distributed?Imagine you're trying to sell a new record today. You can't just put up a sign in music stores and expect to reach all the listeners interested. Instead, you need to facilitate awareness through a more diversified strategy that includes media placements, touring and social engagement. The key to reaching all the hiring managers who may be interested in your candidacy is to take a similarly layered approach and not pigeonhole the search to a single source.Scour LinkedIn, CareerBuilder and Indeed for new opportunities, but, also use services like TweetDeck to create segmented lists of social feeds sharing relevant opportunities and stay alert for appealing postings. At the same time, build trusted relationships with recruiters and network with university alumni who can provide inroads to a new job that's not on the boards. None of these strategies are a silver bullet, but employing a diverse buffet of options widens the net of relevant and discoverable leads you'll encounter.2. Submitting a suitable volume of applications. When looking for new work, you'll want to cover your bases by applying to many different positions (the quantity is determined by the urgency of your search). However, even though you've now identified how to find the right jobs, submitting enough applications to yield qualified interest isn't so easy in a risk averse business world. In a job market that hosts tons of applications for roles that offer little training, more hiring firms create an initial layer of screening that goes well beyond the standard résumé and cover letter. For example, word of mouth marketing firm Likeable Media asks applicants for content strategy roles to not only submit standard materials but also create an acrostic poem with their first name, describe the meme they best identify with and explain what makes them unique in 150 characters or less. While this flavor of application can help candidates show their personality, it can be frustrating to invest the time necessary to complete it without even the promise of an application receipt. To effectively cope, try to group opportunities by similarity and duration to complete so your application sessions are as efficient as possible. With this kind of pre-planning and an easily customizable résumé and cover letter, you can quickly fire off five to 10 applications for roles with basic application criteria while you wait until your next session to tackle one to two that require longer essays. Just be sure the applications that will take more time to complete are really in your wheelhouse because your time is too valuable to waste.3. Dealing with uncertainty and rejection. Uncertainty and rejection are rampant in the job search … failing to understand if you 're not getting called back. Wondering whether it is because your application was reviewed and denied or because it slipped through the cracks. Confusion over how you need to improve and recruiters who disappear after (what you thought was) a good interview. To persevere through these common frustrations, first consider all the red tape stalling the hiring firm's internal processes, and thus, their ability to get back to you: turnover in the human resources department, an urgent need that turns out not to be so urgent or a competing candidate already deep in process. At the same time, a study from Talent Function Group LLC found applicant tracking systems auto-reject 75 percent of applicants for digital postings, while a study by TheLadders found recruiters spend about six seconds evaluating those applications you worked so hard on, quickly dismissing those candidates who don't fit the exact mold they're looking to fill. With all these moving parts obstructing entry to the hiring firm' s pipeline, take solace in the fact that uncertainty and rejection are simply a new normal in the job market and shouldn't leave job seekers down on themselves. After all, it's not that they're not into you … it's that they're not into almost everybody.Bottom line: While not always the case, anyone looking for that great new job is likely to get knocked down a few times. But, with continuous iteration, a lot of patience and some thick skin, you can surmount these frustrations and persevere until the light at the end of the tunnel emerges.Ben Weiss is the digital marketing strategist for Infusive Solutions â€" an NYC-based IT staffing firm in the Microsoft Partner Network that specializes in the placement of .NET, SharePoint and SQL Server developers as well as Windows Systems Engineers, DBAs and help desk support professionals in verticals such as legal, finance, fashion and media. SAHMs How to Handle an Employment Gap in Job Applications

SAHMs How to Handle an Employment Gap in Job Applications SAHMs How to Handle an Employment Gap in Job Applications 184 It goes without saying that parenting requires an ability to meet tight deadlines, communicate effectively, coordinate daily activities, and balance multiple priorities- but how can you creatively articulate professional development on your resume and cover letter when you’ve been out of work for over a year? Here three simple resume and cover letter tips for SAHMs to address their work gap: 1. Discuss the gap at the forefront of both your resume and cover letter. The resume: It’s important to acknowledge your leave of absence right away in the first section of your resume (the “value statement”) and within the first two paragraphs of your cover letter. There’s no need to divulge in the resume beyond describing your eagerness to jump back into the workforce after taking a temporary hiatus to take care of your children. The cover letter: This one-page document gives you a little more wiggle room to elaborate on how you chose to be a stay-at-home parent until your children were old enough to attend primary school, for instance. You can then add a statement suggesting that this new milestone (or any other notable parent-related experience) will allow you to re-enter the workforce at full-speed to leverage your diverse strengths in task prioritization, interpersonal communication, and event coordination. 2. Highlight your volunteer experience and any additional education or training in your resume. Volunteer work doesn’t have to be shoved into the back corners of your resume. If you’ve volunteered for anything notable or relevant, list it! It doesn’t have to be glorifying, altruistic work. If you’re applying for a project management position, perhaps you helped coordinate and execute a home renovation project. If you’re an accountant or financial advisor, try consulting friends or family members and documenting your experiences and results in your resume. The same advice applies to education. Taking online courses or attending educational speeches and seminars indicates that you are a proactive and dedicated professional. 3. Adjust the format and style of your resume. Stick with a chronological format that lists your relevant work history from most recent (even if it’s volunteer) to no longer than 15 years ago. Focus primarily on your accomplishments and skills gained from recent volunteer experiences or personal development activities. If you don’t have any recent volunteer experience, don’t sweat it! By simply addressing the gap from the get-go in your resume and cover letter, it directly implies that you have nothing to hide and that you are more than ready to break through to the career you’ve been waiting for. Back up Your Soft Skills with Hard Facts

Back up Your Soft Skills with Hard Facts Soft Skills, Hard Facts Back up Your Soft Skills with Hard Facts You've probably seen words and phrases like detail oriented and strong communication skills in job ads. And maybe you've used some of the same wording on your resume. But when it comes to selecting candidates to interview, employers are more likely to look beyond those soft skills to whether you have the qualifications to do the job. Sure, soft skills are important, but they're not likely to put you on the short list unless you support them with hard facts. Although a vague list of soft skills on your resume might not get you an interview, those soft skills can help solidify your chance at getting a job offer once you're in an interview. That's because they indicate how effectively you might fit in with the new employer. Be ready to address them in an interview if the hiring manager asks you one or more behavioral questions that probe past work experiences. So, you'll need to show - rather than tell - the hiring manager that you are, for example, an effective communicator, a detail-oriented individual, or able to work independently. Imagine this possible exchange in a job interview: HIRING MANAGER: You have the depth of experience and skills that we're looking for. I need to ask you, though, about the keen attention to detail that you state in your resume. Tell me of a time when that attention to detail was beneficial to your company and how it may have scored points with upper management. INTERVIEWEE: Well, there are a couple of situations that come to mind. One that I remember quite well involved a cost-benefit analysis for a planned purchase of 250 mobile devices - including specialized software - for our sales force. I examined the requirements we needed in the technology, met with representatives from 12 vendors, and asked each of them a very thorough list of questions that I gathered from the sales director and chief of IT. After we narrowed the list of vendors to five, I talked extensively with about 10 customers from among those vendors about their experience with the technology, and was able to confidently make a recommendation on which companies we should negotiate with. In the end, the sales force was very happy and the technology we chose helped boost sales 10 percent. The CFO was so pleased with my work on the deal that I received a generous cash bonus. Did I answer your question adequately? In this example, the interviewee explains his attention to detail, how it helped his employer, and what the net effect was: a boost in revenue and recognition from one of the company's top officials. And he closes by asking the hiring manager if his answer was satisfactory. The lesson here for job seekers is that if you're going to include any of these soft skills in your resume, you must be prepared to support them with examples from your work experience. While I was writing this post, I pulled four job ads at random and found these soft skills listed in at least one of them: Results-oriented; Perform effectively in a deadline environment; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Highly organized; Work well under pressure; High energy, enthusiasm, and motivated demeanor. When you think about your soft skills, be sure to write down - for your own reference - at least one incident from your work experience in which you demonstrated that skill. Then, review those notes before each job interview. The more you can show those values to a potential employer, the less likely you'll be eliminated from consideration for the job.

The Importance of your Phone Voice in Business

The Importance of your “Phone Voice” in Business The Importance of your “Phone Voice” in Business Just like a formal letter, a phone call should be divided into a few sections including an introduction, an articulation of the purpose for calling, and a polite salutation. Think about the number of calls (especially voicemails) where the caller doesn’t share a name or even a company; just a rote recitation of a contact number and instructions to call back. It is important to avoid being that sort of person. Always introduce yourself and who you represent in a polite and warm way. The bulk of your phone call will involve articulating your purpose, which should be done clearly and easily understood. Making sure you are easily understood involves more than simple enunciation. It also demands calling from a quite place and a location with a clear reception. Any indication from a caller (such as asking “what?”) should be immediately addressed by adjusting your environment appropriately. And any technical glitches, such as problems with connection devices or headsets, should be attributed to your own technology, not blamed on the person on the receiving end of your call. Your phone presentation matters so much because you never know how your interaction will impact you or your company in the future. You could be speaking to a potential customer, or even a boss, so there is no excuse for neglecting phone etiquette, even in a modern, technology-oriented office space with its inherent depersonalization. It is that very tendency to depersonalize communications that makes being personable on the phone more meaningful than in the past.
